Blended Sound Sight Program of Learning (BSS) is a comprehensive and ingenious reading and writing program developed by
Mrs. Anna Ingham of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Over the last 30+ years of teaching Mrs. Ingham has developed, often under scrutiny at the time, a program that has grown from her own students’ needs, abilities, and interests. The Blended Sound-Sight Program of Learning is a remarkable program of teaching reading and writing to young students.

Mrs. Ingham, along with her students, developed meaningful activities which make our complex language seem easier. The Sound City idea is a phenomenal technique to teach different sounds and sound combinations. Activity Time, Discovery Words, and the heart of the program: the Library, are just a few of the tools teachers should use to motivate and inspire their students. Ensuring that children will learn, the BSS program becomes a systematic and sequential way of organizing classroom instruction and classroom procedures. Through the fun-filled and exciting motivators of setting and achieving goals, the students quickly become competent in the art of reading and writing. When the goals are near, clear, and attainable, it does not take long for the children to experience success, which develops and ensures a positive self-identity and the determination to reach the next goal.

The Blended Sound-Sight Program of Learning is a successful system whichblends a rich phonics instruction with the sight method of reading. Elementary teachers who have adopted this program are astounded by the results. However, it is not for the faint of heart! This comprehensive program is not just a “read the manual and try it” type of method. The talented team of master BSS teachers and the Blended Sound-Sight founder, Mrs. Anna Ingham, provide a six day intensive course for teachers every summer in Alberta, Canada.
